My Story

Ok, so I hate doing this and asking people for money. But it’s a really good cause and Barley is staring at me with his big puppy eyes…..

When we took Barley into our lives to support Guide Dogs UK as volunteer Puppy Raisers in December 2024, I wanted to do something to help raise funds for this wonderful charity. It costs up to £102k to raise and train a guide dog puppy through to full deployment. Whilst we are complete volunteers, there are a lot of costs involved for the charity.

I decided to take on a triple challenge to keep myself focused as part of ‘Team Guide Dogs’. I’ve already promised no more marathons so I’m doing a marathon and a half! Well, kind of. Spread over the Great Manchester Half Marathon (May), Great North Run Half Marathon (September), and Great Scottish Run Half Marathon (October), I’m hoping to combine two things I care deeply about to help raise some vital funds. To be clear, I’m covering all entry costs, travel and accommodation, but I’ve pledged to raise whatever I can. I have been given a cool TGD vest which I’ll proudly wear across the 39.3 miles. You’ll see this on my socials I’m sure.

My charity place is for The Great North Run but I wanted to add the other two events to make it worthwhile.

Times are challenging and I don’t expect everyone to be able to spare cash, and there’s lots of people doing lots of great things and equally seeking sponsorship too. If you can spare literally a pound or two, it would be hugely appreciated and will help on the days when the training miles are a challenge, and more importantly, go a long way to support the incredible work of Guide Dogs UK. You can even add Gift Aid to boost your donation if you are a UK Tax Payer, and you can set the platform fee to zero ( I would suggest doing this).

Barley has offered a cuddle to everyone who helps, as long as you come and visit. He will also chew my running shoes when I leave them lying about and snatch as much of my running kit before it makes it to the washing machine. It’s likely that my last race (also my 50th Half Marathon), will coincide with Barley’s last few weeks living with us before he heads off to his next stage of training so I’m doing this in his name as he’s helped change our lives immeasurably too. We likely won't see him again but we know he'll do his best to learn how to help someone who needs him.

Anyway, I’ll do the whole running bit, and if you can help with a small sponsor, it would mean a huge amount. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Thank you so much, your support means a lot personally but more importantly for the people you are helping.

Love,

Ewen (and Barley) 🦮❤️x
