My Story
I was diagnosed with MS 10 years ago when over the course of a weekend I lost all feeling in my legs. After various tests and an MRI scan the hospital found I had multiple lessons on my brain and spine, the hospital thought I'd had MS for a while but I hadn't noticed any of the signs until I had a massive relapse and lost the use of my legs.
The MS Trust was very helpful in sending out information on the disease and also what treatments were available at the time which was very helpful when I was discussing what the next steps would be with my MS Nurse.
I never gain full use of my legs and needed to use a wheelchair outside the house and crutches in the house and at times I would have to use my wheelchair in the house. I'd already raised over £1000 for the MS Trust by doing a zip wire of the Tyne Bridge so was looking for the next challenge to help raise some funds for them.
So I decided to run the Great North Run well when I say run I mean wheel myself round the Great North Run well when I say wheel myself what I mean is have to friends who will push me round the course but I will be pushing myself down the hills. So my 2 lovely helpers are Stephen Monkman and Clare Iley who both jumped at the chance to do it. Well Clare jumped at the chance Stephen was more pushed.
We are all taking this very seriously, I've bought a fifth wheel to go on the front of my wheelchair to make it easier to push Stephen has bought a weighted vest to wear when he is doing his training and Clare well Clare climbs mountains for fun so she is already fit.
But Clare also has a personal interest in helping out as her elder brother was diagnosed with MS when he was quite young so she has seen first hand the effects MS can have on not only the person but there family and friends, so we are hoping to raise as much money as possible for the MS Trust so they can continue helping others in any way they can.
